Online printer Bluetree Group has become the first UK business to install the new IGS Cobalt SP800 single-pass inkjet printer.

The machine was installed in mid-June and supplied by Monmouthshire-based machinery supplier International Graphic Supplies (IGS).

The CMYK Cobalt SP800 was developed and built in collaboration with IGS’ Chinese partner for wide-format and label printers, Antel Holding based in Guangzhou.

An HP FI1000 industrial inkjet printhead is used to achieve the quality and productivity in a single-pass design.

“We are incredibly excited to welcome the IGS Cobalt SP800 to our Rotherham site,” said Mark Young, managing director at Bluetree Group.

“This installation is a key part of our ongoing investment in the latest technology to meet the evolving needs of our customers. The Cobalt SP800’s speed and quality will not only enhance our production capabilities but also allow us to offer more innovative and cost-effective solutions to our clients.”

The Cobalt SP800 prints at speeds of up to 30m/min and can produce over 5,000 corrugated boxes per hour. It has a maximum material size of 800mm x 2.5m and a maximum image size of 594mm x 2.5m. The machine’s infrared sensors ensure accurate printing on various sizes and shapes.

The device uses eco-friendly, water-based inks that are free from VOCs and other toxic chemicals, aligning with Bluetree’s commitment to environmental responsibility.

With its Harlequin RIP interface, the new printer is now fully integrated into Bluetree's workflow, ensuring a seamless transition and immediate impact on production according to the business, which is already using the new machine to produce over 20,000 kraft bags per week.

Bluetree Group has also recently invested in PlastGrommet’s integrated banner finishing technology at its Rotherham, South Yorkshire site.

Founded in 1989, Bluetree Group employs over 300 staff and operates two brands, Instantprint and Route 1 Print. Its 13,470sqm production facility in Rotherham houses all its print brands.

Peter Flynn, managing director at IGS, said: “It is a pleasure to partner with the Bluetree Group, a company that shares our vision for innovation in the print sector.

“The Cobalt SP800 is a perfect fit for their operation, and we are confident it will help them continue to grow and lead the market.”

IGS will demonstrate the machine’s capabilities at The Print Show from 23-25 September at the NEC, Birmingham, where it will also officially launch its new variable data software.

“This powerful new tool integrates seamlessly with the Harlequin RIP, empowering our customers to create personalised, high-impact print campaigns faster and more efficiently than ever before,” Flynn added.

IGS will be at the show in partnership with DPS (Digital Printing Systems UK).
