Mondi Expands Digital Printing Capabilities for High-Volume Packaging
Mondi expands corrugated board packaging printing capabilities
Mondi has expanded its packaging portfolio with a high-performance digital printing solution following its acquisition of Schumacher Packaging's Western European operations.
The development allows for customised, high-volume printing directly onto corrugated board packaging – an advancement that has already been adopted by Komsa, a German distributor of digital infrastructure.
Komsa, which dispatches up to 35,000 parcels daily, has integrated Mondi's printing technology into its logistics workflow. The system enables consecutive barcodes to be printed directly onto parcels without the need for separate labels or manual application. This change has led to reduced lead times, lower operational costs, and fewer labelling errors.
Previously, barcode labels were applied using automated dispensers. Now, Komsa's packaging line, equipped with 60 scanners, reads barcodes printed directly onto the boxes – positioned for visibility on all four sides. This streamlined method supports the company’s next-day delivery model while improving overall process efficiency.
Mondi's digital printing technology allows for the production of variable barcodes and high-resolution graphics without the use of traditional printing plates. It uses water-based inks that are compliant with food safety standards and can produce a range of customisations, including seasonal or regional packaging designs and unique QR codes, all within a single print run.
Harald Josef Ollinger, vice president of marketing and communications at Komsa, said the collaboration with Mondi has provided technical and operational improvements. "We are not only making our logistics processes more efficient, but also more sustainable," he said.
The new printing capabilities are part of Mondi's broader strategy to offer flexible, scalable packaging solutions to businesses looking to optimise logistics and reduce waste.
